Who Am I ?
Why am I here? What is my purpose? What is my identity?
Why did God make me?
To know who you are you must look at your Creator. You can learn a lot about yourself by looking at your parents. God is a Father and He made you in His image. God is three in One, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. You are also three in one. You have a physical body. Inside your body, you have a soul, which is your heart, mind and personality. Inside your soul, you have a spirit. Your spirit is your source of life and your conscience, or God consciousness. Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Thessalonians 5:23 NKJV) When you are born again the Holy Spirit of God is joined to your spirit. But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him. (1 Corinthians 6:17 NKJV)

The reason God made you like Him is so you can have a relationship with Him. You are the same species as God. The greatest commandment God gave to people in the Holy Bible is this… You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. (Deuteronomy 6:5 NKJV) You were designed by love, and for love. Your highest purpose will always be to love God. Your second highest purpose is to love other people. When we love God His love can flow through us and touch other people. God wants to express His love to you and also through you. God wants you to learn how to love the way He does.
“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. (Matthew 5:43-45 NIV)
To find your true life you must love and trust God so much that you are willing to give up your current life for Him. When we give to God He always gives us back so much more. Jesus says, “He who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it”. (Matthew 10:38-39 NKJV)
If you have given your life to Jesus Christ then your true identity and destiny is in Him.
If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory. (Colossians 3:1-4 NKJV)
When you give your life to Christ He comes and lives inside you, and your are in Him. He gives you new eternal life that is what it means to be born again. You are now living a life of faith in Him. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me, (Galatians 2:20 NKJV).
Our full identity is not revealed in this world but when Jesus is revealed we shall be like Him, a son or daughter of God. Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure. (1 John 3:1-3)
If you learn to make the Lord your source of joy and happiness, He will give you His desires. You can then know some of your purpose through your desires. Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun. (Psalms 37:4-6 NIV)
God wants your purpose to include being a disciple of Jesus Christ, living in Him, and His words living in you; then His desires for you will actually become your desires and you can pray for them to happen; God will answer this prayer and it will bring glory to Him. If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples. “As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love. If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love, (John 15:7-10 NKJV).
He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. (Micah 6:8 NIV)
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. (Jeremiah 29:11-13 NIV) God does not say to seek your identity, He says to seek Him and He will fulfill His good plans for your life.
Believers in Christ are justified by faith just as as Abraham was so we are considered children of Abraham. Just as Abraham “BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS ACCOUNTED TO HIM FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS.” Therefore know that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham. And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the Gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, “In you all the nations shall be blessed.” So then those who are of faith are blessed with believing Abraham, (Galatians 3:6-9 NKJV).
Therefore it is of faith that it might be according to grace, so that the promise might be sure to all the seed, not only to those who are of the law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all (as it is written, “I HAVE MADE YOU A FATHER OF MANY NATIONS”) in the presence of Him whom he believed–God, who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did; who, contrary to hope, in hope believed, so that he became the father of many nations, according to what was spoken, “SO SHALL YOUR DESCENDANTS BE.” (Romans 4:16-18 NKJV)
Since Abraham is our spiritual father, we can learn from him also about ourselves, and who we are becoming. “Listen to Me, you who follow after righteousness, You who seek the LORD: Look to the rock from which you were hewn, And to the hole of the pit from which you were dug. Look to Abraham your father, And to Sarah who bore you; For I called him alone, And blessed him and increased him.” (Isaiah 51:1-2 NKJV)
For those who overcome they will be given a new name a new identity that will be only known to them. Repent therefore! Otherwise, I will soon come to you and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give him a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to him who receives it. (Revelation 2:16-17 NIV) Your eternal identity is a personal thing between you and Jesus. For now, we must focus on Him and overcoming this world.
The reason God gave you life is so that you would have something valuable to give back to Him. Your life on earth is a seed. You have a choice to give your life to the Lord, or not. If you give your life to Jesus in this world, you will receive a glorious eternal life. Before Jesus was facing the cross, He said this….
But Jesus answered them, saying, “The hour has come that the Son of Man should be glorified. Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain. He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor. (John 12:23-26 NKJV)
I heard a teaching about learning who you are in Christ. The problem is that puts the focus on you, which is the beginning of pride. God gives gifts, talents, and possessions, but they are not your purpose and they are not your identity. Only as we focus on Jesus will we become who we are destined to be. Until then we are to stay focused on knowing Him.
Thus says the LORD*, Do not let the wise man boast in his wisdom! Do not let the mighty man boast in his might! Do not let the rich man boast in his riches! But the one who boasts will boast in this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD Who exercises loving kindness, judgment, and acts of loving kindness in the earth, for in these things I delight, says the LORD. (Jeremiah 9:22-23 ONMB)
